Pedaling West
It will be the adventure of a lifetime for Carrie Brinkley… if she makes it to the end alive.
When Carrie loses her job and boyfriend during the opening weeks of the pandemic, she’s determined to reset her life in a positive direction. The answer? A solo, two-month, cross-country bicycle trip from Virginia Beach to Mendocino, California.
Yet dangers lurk that she’d never anticipated. During Carrie’s idyllic journey across the continent, her greatest danger comes not from her encounters with angry animals, road hazards, or the elements. Something much worse stalks her—something much too human.
Carrie knows where she’s going. What she doesn’t know is who’s following her—or whether she’ll live to reach her destination.
Why You Might Enjoy This Story…
After finishing The Other Side of Good and having to backdate the events of that book to make them occur before the COVID 19 crises, I decided I couldn’t fictionally avoid addressing the very real circumstances encompassing the world environment caused by the calamity. Pedaling West became my COVID-era novel, with the anchor crime relating to the fraudulent application of government relief programs for businesses forced to endure the crises.
As Carrie Brinkly pedaled across the country, pursued by criminals intent on silencing her, she receives help from FBI special agents Marina Butnari and Doug Hill, working together for the first time. As exciting as her journey becomes in the book, many readers also enjoyed the travelogue aspect of the story—and so did I.
My intense research into the geography that Carrie would traverse resulted in my own cross country trip (with my wife) along the exact route Carrie took. We took a nice car and stayed in more luxurious motels than Carrie could afford—but we saw the same sights, up close and in person on a journey that had no timetable. It ranks as one of the most compelling experiences of my life.

“A story about perseverance, endurance, and inner strength, packed with emotional highs and lows. Coe’s writing is so vivid and descriptive that I found myself squeezing my imaginary bike brakes when I got to parts in the story where Carrie had near accidents.”
